My suggest is modularize the sprites of things.
fior example
64X64 Player

But a hat:
64x32 on top

and a chain:
64x32 on midle up:

|        |
|#########|
|#########|        |
|        |

And that of all type of equips:

Would it be a good idea to have a tileset for the body and a tileset for the head? this way we could have more variations at a lower cost. The head could have many more variations.
