Wombat: Old info..not too important, but keeping for "just in case"

Meh, this page is a dump.

On the works until I forget about it: 1. Promotionals for Social Media 2. Horned Worm 3. Beach debris 4. The Mana World: Chronicles Demo

The concept of Chronicles is similar to the TMW-Adventures concept in some ways (easily made world using existing TMW content) but uses smaller and contained maps with few to no open area maps. A linear storyline moves the character from town to a series of woodland and cave scenarios where the character will battle monsters and humanoids to get the weapons, armor and equipment needed to be able to challenge the next area. The end of the story may involve killing a boss or solving a complex mini-game to prevent the coming of a demi-god on the world, something like that. Once the "end" is completed, the Chronicle is over. For the demo, that is the end of the game. For versions beyond the demo, the character can leave the world and go to a pocket dimension that hosts an Order dedicated to combatting the forces of darkness as they travel throughout time and space. Each new story written for TMW: Chronicles would have a portal linked through this pocket dimension and would play as its own game. Content releases for TMW: Chronicles would be small and fully complete games that might need some bug fixes, but no expansions.

Promotions: Peak 200 by 2015 Initiative
In addition to development projects, there is the promotions initiative I am attempting to both flesh out and participate in the execution of. Right now we are merely in the brainstorm phase of understanding what we want to do with promotions, my ideas have several points that ultimately hope to lead to: a larger number of content contributions, a larger more permanent development team and a larger player base.

My main goal is to move forward the "Peak 200 by 2015" initiative. This promotional attempt is to find whatever ways possible to drive the number of players on the official server to peak at over 200 real players. I feel to accomplish this task, we may need to:

* Invite volunteers from The Mana World's larger community to participate in the growth of the promotions initiative.

* More strongly define guilds and attempt to provide stronger assistance to the creation of guilds, including contributor participation in guilds and/or the guild as a content contribution team. In the past up to today, TMW guilds have a tendency to include developers and we should attempt to encourage this behavior within guilds and guild members.

* Make a database of all media about The Mana World on the wiki.

* Create a "Look Who's Talking About Us" wiki page with links to a large variety of reviews and youtube videos featuring The Mana World. Should include not just a link, but a description of what is included in the video to encourage viewing.

* Shut down all old media The Mana World made from before this initiative and create, if possible, a new replacement description. Attempt to make any new descriptions, including user names and passwords, controlled by TMWC so updates can occur more easily. The promotions team would have access to these user names and passwords on an individual use basis.

* Find out how to incorporate The Mana World as a non-profit and create advertising banners to be placed at approved locations, paid for by donations collected by a TMWC approved Treasurer.

* Continue steady content updates and add updates about what is going on to the forums to encourage use on the forums. Keep regular wiki updates. Active forums and wiki reflect the activity in the game, though they aren't necessarily the same, they are a way to show the curious that we are both worth playing and contributing to.

* Attempt to create a promotional alliance with: Aethyra, Whispers of Avalon, Evol Online, Manaplus, Manasource, Invertika and Source of Tales. Find ways to combine promotional efforts to include these other games, to show that we exist in not just a community of players, nor just a community of developers, but also a community of games. We *are* free 2D MMORPGs. We all want help with development. We all want to be played and all share some link to The Mana World. By showing a community of games, I believe a higher overall potential to generate contributions will occur for all games.

About

This is about the Chronicles' Demo. It is an attempt to streamline the Chronicle's concept of using existing TMWA, TMW-Sound, TMW-Art and Manaplus to make a new game. In addition to these existing stops, this demo will make no new monsters, no new equipment and use existing balance as of the game's creation. After it is done, future fixes may change or alter the game to reflect TMW's view of balance, but it is not an ever expanding game like TMW. New Chronicles after the demo may link through a central town which can jump world to world, time to time and play out the many stories of Mana in a multi-dimensional multi-verse...or whatever.

Characters start in small town. Start with clothing on their backs (cotton shorts and cotton shirt).

So you want to help this project, but you have little or no idea how to get into it? The Mana World development team is not a closed circle like many other projects. You don't need to apply to anyone or ask for "being taken into the team". You don't have to ask for permission to work on something or wait for someone to assign a task to you. A team member is basically anyone who volunteers to do something for the game. For further information and assistance, you can ask for help in IRC or on the forums. You'll be more effective if you know how to use Git.

Technical aspects
The technical aspects of development of TMW include tweaking our custom server (tmwAthena). The server is done in C++ and scripts are done in the tmwAthena scripting language. Notably tmwAthena is an SVN snapshot from eAthena (a Ragnarok Online game server emulator software) in early 2004. We've extensively hacked it and cleaned it over the years (it was at the moment of taking the snapshot in transition from the basis of an old hacky MUD server to the current eAthena codebase). The technical aspects of the TMW project also include packaging data updates for the client.

Clients
ManaPlus
Official client. Site and downloads, bug tracker.

Mana
Original client. Site, downloads, bug tracker.

Content
Content means: new monsters, new equipment, new maps, new NPCs, new quests, new anything into the game.

Content does not mean: GFX, SFX.

Before anything can get into the game, it should be designed. After that it should be implemented server-sided. Then GFX and potentially also SFX can be requested for it and it can go into the game once they're done. Currently visioning ideas is a collective process anyone can take part in and the people doing scripting are cherry-picking whatever ideas they want to get into the game. Scripting stuff is also a free for all process. Once there is a good idea to expand the world, in general new maps can be requested. Reading the forums thoroughly and asking publicly usually gets you answers rather well.

Graphics
Graphics development could currently (June 2013) use a few pixel artists going about and retouching old mistakes in tilesets and sprite sets. Also if the content development crowd picks up and starts to provide concepts which would require new GFX work to be done, then there is going to be a demand for new equipment work, tilesets and sprite sets. Please remember to pay attention to our guidelines.

Also do hunt for unfulfilled REQ topics on the forums if you're looking for something to do. Newbie pixel artists or people doing their first pixel art piece ever are also very welcome. The community can be pretty harsh at times, but there are also people around who actually do know what they're talking about. It is up to you to distinguish between these two.

SFX / Music
The SFX and music development scheme for TMW is currently not really all that active. New sounds and music are always appreciated.

This page is for developing a guild in the hopes of showing how an active guild presence within the game can further the game's potential.

A Guild should be able to have a presence: in game, on the wiki, on the forums.

In Game
Guilds may have some mechanisms the server creates to encourage them, but this is working off of what I currently know about guilds. Guilds main function is to make playing the game more enjoyable. To add to this, getting more players to play and keep playing increases the number of active players in game overall, making the game more enjoyable, so most guilds have a vested interest in ensuring the player number of the games they are a part of increase.

Guilds may in game:

* Engage new players and attempt to get them oriented in game.

* Establish events that invite their membership and/or the player community at large.

* Make roleplaying a requirement for membership and being in-game also means being in-character.

* Take donations from their membership to create rewards for events.

* Make or join parties that include their guild members, should they be of appropriate level.

* Have meetings, periodically, sporatically or regularly. These meetings could be members only, open participation or directed towards the player community (like panel style meetings).

* Bring credibility to an issue that needs development or GM concern. Bring credibility to an issue that needs the player community to be concerned about.

On the Wiki
On the wiki, not only can players give some detail to their player groups, clans and guilds, but they can detail their events, list their membership, participate in development projects, make independent contributions, list their donations, make other roster database lists relevant to their guilds and so on. The wiki team will work with guilds on developing appropriate templates should it be desired.

On the Forums
Guilds on the forums can make event announcements and participate in player discussions on any variety of issues. They can also become aware of social abuses that might be shady, but not illegal in the game being done by players or do roleplaying for their guilds if they decide such is fun and important. On the forums, sharing fan art and fan stories can be a big boost to making a guild recognized and perhaps even influence the direction of development. They can provide feedback collected by the membership to development, such as bugs or perhaps game balance issues that might otherwise of gone unnoticed.

Event Coordinators, Game Masters and game administrators have the ability to organize or help players to organize events.

Northwest Tulimshar
Because players enter Northwest Tulimshar, a number of things could be done to make it better here:

* More miscellaneous stuff and NPCs in the starting area. NPCs could be doing their own thing, but perhaps they are animated in some way to be more appealing to the eye. Also make better NPC poses and/or animate them for the starting area NPCs.

* Have something going on at the docks, including some low level delivery quest between two NPCs on the walk through the docks. Add NPCs fishing off the side of the docks.

* Expand the Wizard School so that magic can be taught from level one.

* Expand the cave behind the Wizard School to have a easy grind area for starting wizards with interesting stuff inside connected to beginning wizard quests.

* Change the bow and short bow offered in the quests to slingshot and hooligan's slingshot. Offer a low level humanoid "hooligan" as a timed event monster that is released every few hours that shoots a slingshot on Western Tulimshar maps. As powerful as the Scorpion, but shoots a slingshot. The hooligan could drop the hooligan's slingshot as well as it being offered in the quests or sold in Tulimshar stores.

* Make street signs and building signs which help locate different areas of Tulimshar. Add NPCs that have an opinion on interacting with: the Wizard Council, the Wizard School, the Docks, North Market, South Market.

* In the North Market, offer daily quests for various drops in the area, offer crafting for iron and concentration potions using Tulimshar native drops. Build a higher grade slingshot (tier 3 slingshot) with snake tongues and wood. Craft like the forest bow, but destroying the snake tongues until tight enough and make it repeatable.

* In the South Market, offer selling bags of stones 1 gp for 10 regular stones or 1 polished stone. In the North Market a man uses alchemy to make polished stones magical, with the character's help. Using snake eggs, black scorpion stingers and cactus potions, he can make X number of magical stones. X being a factor effected by the same alchemy system used to make the healing potions.
Kage's Spark Battle
Backstory
Tonori
Quests/Plots
West Tulimshar
Because players enter West Tulimshar, a number of things could be done to make it better here:

Kage's Spark Battle
* Boss_Fight
Delivery
* Continue Kryllian quests and open his shop.
Miners/Memorial/Expedition
* I want some ruins and dead miners around tulimshar from the earthquake.
* I have a memorial built for the them in the noble quarter and a quest planned around it.
* Basically this area like like the crypts & Cave2 set combined.
* Remember Us, On Release the memorial will not have a ghost. Instead the Council of Wizards are Organizing an Expedition to clear the Road to Gispaa.
** Each Member of the Council will require various materials and reward them with a supply crate (healing/mana items) and something to use to help spawn the ghost

Expedition
* Explorers from Nivalis are in Tonori doing research.
** Each of the 4 members has a quest for the player
** Each dealing with a various element local to Tulimshar
** Crick Slime Samples 043-3
** Others not decided.

Thieves Guild
* Suspicious Greeting, Shady Trader talks to those with level 80+
* Earning Our Trust, Multi-choice quests; B&E (Dex), PP (Agi), Chats (Int), Late Fees (Str)
* Player has to complete 10 successfully
* Prison, while performing some thief actions you can get caught
** Set save point to castle dungeon.
** spawn <GuardMob>, fight or flee.
** Escape, Sneak out, pay fine, work it off in the mines or Gladiator (PvP).
* Pirates!
* Stepping on Toes, Steal the pirates booze shipments located at various locations on 023-1 & 023-3.
* Doing the Two Step, Sell stolen booze to Buccuneer's Den owner at 004-2.
* Eviction Notice, Go into the caves under Buccuneer's Den and kill The Dread Pirate Marley.
* Sub-Quest, Pirates Riddle Room requires Treasure Map.
* Once complete the Cellar door in the basement of the Buccaneer's Den that would normally take you to 004-3 takes you to 004-2 the Thieves Guild which will contain an entrance to 004-3 similar to the existing one.
1. Add equipment frames to expanded player sprite.

2. Make weapons to go with new equipment frames.

3. Gather all weapon sprites that are release candidates [RC] and prepare them for addition.

4. Fix and experiment with shields, adding if they work well enough.
Proposal For TMW on Manaserv: I have an idea which I'm not going to fully flesh out dealing with TMW on Manaserv using CR1 stuff with existing tmwArt. Since it will use the same tiles as being used in the Trade City, the Newbington town designed by Rotonen's team can be created as the starting area for TMW on Manaserv. Though we can still port TMW to Manaserv, it might be better to just take the backstory and the geography, but not the maps of tmwAthena's game. This way, all new maps can be created to serve the new content and two different games with the same themes can exist, similar to final fantasy where the world changes, but often themes, geography, backstory elements, etc. carry over from previous games. So overall I don't want to look at TMW on Manaserv as a sequel, I do want it to be an entirely new game. It will still use Argaes, Tonori and Kaizei. It will still use existing tmwArt.

Wombat: Added an update to my projects as well as a paragraph of thoughts on tmw on manaserv

What I'm working on and will be working on:

1. Tonori Expansion (pixel art)

2. Crypt (XML animation testing, submitting to git)

3. Trade City (Tileset development, new monsters)

4. Balance (Add frames to equipment to include new attack forms, new weapons for new attack forms).

5. Barbarian Village (Assist art on being complete)

6. Thermin (Assist art on being complete)

7. Lumber Camp (Assist art on being complete)

Also I have an idea which I'm not going to fully flesh out dealing with TMW on Manaserv using CR1 stuff with existing tmwArt.
