'''Note about magic spells and quests:'''

This page is about magic in general. If you are looking for the quests or the spells list please check these:
* A list of all magic [[spells]], including descriptions and details like required items, used mana, recharge time and so on.
* The wiki page about the well designed [[Magic Quests]] telling you which NPC to talk to and what you need to learn spells or magic skills.

==Introduction==

Magic in [[Project description|The Mana World]] is made up of 6 Magic [[Skills|skills]] and one [[Skills#Focus Skills|focusing skill]]:
* [[General Magic Skill]]
* [[Life Magic Skill]]
* [[War Magic Skill]]
* [[Transmutation Magic Skill]]
* [[Nature Magic Skill]]
* [[Astral Magic Skill]]
and:
* [[Astral Soul Skill]]

To cast a spell, a player must type in the "incantation" of the spell, which will always start with an # followed by the incantation.

''Example'': #abizit

==Getting Started==

In order to begin using magic, a player must complete a small series of quests:

* First, a player must touch the [[Mana Seed]]. To find the Mana Seed, head west on the stone path from [[Hurnscald]]. At the first fork (at a farm with many trees), go north. Continue north until the path forks again. Take the west fork and follow the path to a set of caves, one higher and one lower. Enter the higher cave, and continue through until it exits. Continue east along the stones and into a second cave. The Mana Seed will be in the northeast corner.
* After touching the Mana Seed, a player must talk to either [[Auldsbel]], [[Rauk The Alchemist|Rauk]] or [[Wyara]]. Wyara is the obvious choice as she requires the least amount of materials. Speak to the NPC about [[Mana Potion]] via the "What do you know about..." inquiry.
* Collect the necessary materials for the Mana Potion. Wyara requires 40 Mauve Herbs and 1 Bottle of Water. The Bottle of Water can be purchased from the [[General Store]], which is the L-shaped building southeast of Wyara's building.
* Go back to the Mana Seed, use the Mana Potion and touch it again. Congratulations! You may now begin learning magic!

===Acquiring and Training [[Magic Spells|Magic Spells]]===
Since your characters don't start with the ability to control magic, they must learn magic from NPCs. Magic trainers can both give you spells, and level you up in whatever schools of magic they can train in. There are currently 8 NPC magic trainers. When you visit a magical NPC, you can ask about other magical NPCs, via the "What do you know about..." inquiry. Some magic trainers are easy to find, while others require searching through more obscure parts of the TMW world.

===Leveling up===
Leveling up requires that you gain experience in magic by practicing spells. Casting the same spell consecutively will result in no additional experience after the first cast. Also, spells that consume items give more magic experience. Once you have gained enough experience in a particular type of magic, you can go to a trainer in that kind of magic, talk to them, and they can advance you, as long as they are an advanced enough trainer for the level of magic you are advancing to.

Use #abizit to check the magic experience you have.To reach the next level, you need 100%:
* "You feel completely overwhelmed by your magic." '''less than 10%'''
* "You feel quite overwhelmed by your magic, but are beginning to see patterns." '''10%-20%'''
* "You feel that you have only the bare minimum of control over your magic." '''20%-30%'''
* "Trying to control your magic is still rather troublesome." '''30%-40%'''
* "You feel you still have a few difficulties in controlling your magic." '''40%-50%'''
* "You feel somewhat in control of your magic." '''50%-60%'''
* "You feel mostly in control of your magic." '''60%-70%'''
* "You feel quite in control of your magic." '''70%-80%'''
* "You feel that you have very good control of your magic." '''80%-90%'''
* "You feel in almost perfect control of your magic." '''90%-100%'''
* "You feel in perfect control of your magic, [and seem on the verge of something more... perhaps you should see the Mana Seed to ask for more magic?]" '''100%-200%'''
* "You have perfect control of what you understand now, but there is now a distinct sensation of something more, something indescribable. If only the Mana Seed would give more magic to you..." '''200%-450%'''
* "Magic flows naturally from you, readily and with ease. Your understanding of what you can currently control at present is flawless, far beyond your requirements to cast magic at this level. [Surely the Mana Seed will more than readily offer more magic for such a proficient user.]" '''450% and over'''

Minimum experience for each level*:
* 1 - n/a
* 2 - 100
* 3 - 1200
* 4 - 8000
* 5 - 40000
<nowiki>*</nowiki>Add up to 1/3% due to built-in inaccuracy of #abizit

'''IMPORTANT NOTE: <span style="color:#FF0000"> Level is currently capped at 2, although you will still receive experience. </span>'''

===Casting [[Magic Spells|Spells]]===
Once you learn spells, you cast them by entering them in to the Player chat tab, placing a hash sign (#) in front of the name of the spell, followed by the spell's parameters, separated by spaces. If a parameter to a spell needs to contain spaces, use double-quotes (") to enclose it.

Certain spells require items, which may or may not be consumed in the process. In addition, different spells are of different levels. For whatever level a spell is, your magic skill level must be equal to or greater than it, in both the spell's school of magic and in general magic, if you want to cast it. For example, to cast a level 2 nature spell, you must be level 2 in both Nature Magic and General Magic.

Finally, in order to be able to cast a spell you need your magic to be enabled (your M.Attack value > 0). This is explained in the next section.

Note that spells do not indicate most ways they can fail in. If you do not have the necessary items for spells requiring ingredients, the spell will silently fail. Similarly, if for example you are casting a healing spell and are too far from the player to be able to heal them, you will see no effect or error message.

===Magical Status===
The main status parameter that increases your magical abilities is ''Intelligence''. Although intelligence is not absolutely necessary to advance in magic, it determines the effectiveness and strength of your spell. Intelligence is used to compute 2 of your stats: ''Magic Attack'' (M.Attack) and ''Magic Defense'' (M.Defense). M.Attack governs the power of your spells. M.Defense determines how well you will be able to withstand magical attacks on you. M. Defense is used only in PvP at the moment as monsters have no magic attack. ''Mana'' or ''Magic Points'' (MP) or ''Spell Points'' (SP) is the amount of magical energy available to devote to casting spells. Mana also increases with Magic Attack It recharges over time; its rate increases with intelligence. In TMW, your ability to use MP requires a non-zero M.Attack value. If your M.Attack value is zero, you may notice that your MP bar is grey (disabled) (pic example goes here). If this happens, it is because your M.Attack value is being penalized by negative status effects or worn equipment.

'''Summary''':
* '''Intelligence''':
** Magic Attack: Each intelligence point adds +1 or +2*(int/5) if int is a multiple of 5
** Magic Defense: Each intelligence point adds +1
** Mana (MP, SP): Increases Mana and Mana recovering rate
** Has influence on your abilities in potion making.
* '''Level''': Level adds +1 to your magic attack, starting at level 14
* '''Magic Attack''': govern the power of the spells: this means it influences the amount of damage or heal, the range of the spell AND the number of shots when applicable ( war magic) or number of creatures summoned (Astral Magic), or number of items you get with transmutation.
* '''[[#Acquiring and Training Magic Spells|Magic Experience]]''': (general, given by #abizit)): Improves spells efficiency in some way <span style="color:#FF0000">(needs to be more accurate)</span>. Low experience can make some spells fail.
* [[Astral Soul Skill|'''Astral Soul''' Focussing Skill]]: Boosts all your magical abilities. It is a must to be a mage.
* [[#Equipment|'''Equipment''': Equipment]] can penalize or improve your magical abilities; Look under the [[#Equipment|Equipment]] header for more information.
*'''important note:''' Married players have an increased spell power when casting Life or Nature spells on their partner. The power bonus is a bit more important if both wear their wedding rings.

==NPCs==
All along the game, several NPCs will help you to progress in your magical practice. They will teach you special spells, sometimes simply by talking with you, but also maybe by asking you some help for some projects. Don't be disappointed if some of them refuse to speak to you in your first encounter with them : it just means that you still need to practice and progress in your magical skills.

(See also [[Item Reference]])

===Penalizing Items===
In TMW, almost all things worn will penalize your M.Attack value, with the exception of weapons, which have no effect on your magical stats. Magic penalties are especially big from metal armor. The following list includes things that penalize your M.Attack value:

* All Gloves, except Silk Gloves
* All Boots, except Cotton Boots
* All shirts and Chest Armor, except the Silk Robe, Sorcerer Robe, and Lazurite robe
* All Shields, except the Scarab Armlet
* All Helmets, many Hats
* All Pants

The worst penalties come with gloves, shields and chest armors such as Warlord Plate.

===Helpful Items===
Some clothes will not penalize your M.Attack, or gives a bonus to M.Attack. The table below tries to give a comprehensive list of them. Order tries to reflect game availability. Highlighted items are the most widely used ones.
The Terranite armor is also a good compromise under special circumstances (Candor for example).

==Background Story==

You arrive at the residence of the Blue Sage '''Nikolai''', a member of the Sages of Kaizei. He lives here with his apprentices and helpers. They maintain a huge library to improve, among other subjects, their knowledge in magical sciences. If you came here to find some book you will be disappointed because as janitor '''Elias''' says: They "had an accident with some magic experiments, that caused some slimes to get out of control." Slimes ate most of the books in the library. Blue Sages are wise, thus "you look like a skilled adventurer. If you'd like to offer your help, that'd be greatly appreciated."
You will soon discover that even Sages can have issues and that the "accident" is likely a sabotage. You will have to help Nikolai and his fellows to save what they can in the library and to get rid of the remaining slimes' nest in the book storage area.

==Walkthrough==

The quest is quite easy to solve (only patience is required to grind the necessary items you have to gather). But if you are in a hurry between two courses in your school, use the following spoiler.

The easiest way to go there, is asking [[Diryn the Traveler]] to warp you right in front of the mansion. This will cost 1,500 GP, but it is the safest and quickest way.

If you want to walk there, use the following guide:

From Nivalis go south to Snow field, then South-West to Snow Path, where the Barbarians installed their camp. Head North to the snow forest, then West along the cliffs, and climb north-east to the Highlands. Now go West and follow the cliffs, then to the North when you meet the wolverns, then East until you find a cave entrance that faces a strange stone circle. Enter the frosty underground and turn left to the west. Follow the North wall and keep it to your right hand until the exit, while taking care of your health (Yetis and other dangerous critters wander around). Once outside, go west and go through the nothern corridor.

This quest has three independent parts: Find who is responsible for the mess in the library, try to save some books, eradicate the slime nests in the library.

'''What To Do:'''

===Investigation===

After you have talked to '''Elias''' and maybe had a chat with NPCs around, go and see '''Peetu''' on 4th floor. He seems to have originated the problem. Be kind, don't troll him and try to calm him first. Listen to his story, then go to Helper's Chief '''Oskari''' to speak in his favour. Now investigate! Obviously no one is better placed than janitor '''Elias''' to keep an eye on strangers. A weird masked visitor has been seen just before the events! Now try to learn more: Return first to '''Peetu''' to gather more information about the way things happened: A magic spell used to keep slimes under control has escaped though Peetu seems to have been very cautious. Perhaps someone in the '''library''' will tell you more? ''Ask them about the masked visitor, without forgetting to inquire about Peetu''. You will surely conclude that Peetu is not responsible for the mess and that the visitor with the golden mask has done some black magic in the workshop to make him fail to seal the slimes. Return to '''Oskari''' and tell him what you learned. You will get valuable information about the 11 Sages of Kaizei. One of them has left and is suspected now to be responsible for the recent sabotages: Weird creature behaviour, Christmas sabotage and now this! Finally, go back to '''Peetu''' and tell him why he is not guilty and that he is only a victim of the traitor. He will reward you with an useful pair of '''Silk Gloves''' (+1 Defense).

===Save Books===

Talk to '''Nikolai''' to get the information about what is needed.

* Help '''Santeri''' make glue with ''8 '''yeti claw'''s'' (10,000 Exp).

* Help '''Janika''' make Covers and bindings with ''80 '''Silk Cocoons'''s'' (10,000 Exp).

* Help '''Ensio''' collect ''31 '''Book Page'''s'' (10,000 Exp per original page, 1,000 Exp per duplicate page, thus (310,000 + 1000*RandomNumber Exp.).

** You can know your progress by checking how Ensio greets you.
:{|
|-
| valign="top" rowspan=3|If he says:

* Return to '''Nikolai''' to get a '''Grimoire''' (+5 Magic Attack, +30 Spell Points) as a reward.

[[Image:Nikolai.png]]

===Eradicate Slimes Nests===

Talk to '''Pyry''' to have information about Slimes nest.
You will have to clear 3 [[Blue Slime]]'s nests (1, 2 and 3 slimes spawned) and 4 [[White Slime]]'s nests (3, 4, 5 and 6 slimes spawned)
If you are helped it is less likely that you succeed in nest clearing.
There is a 1/20 probability that a "slime drips out of a bookshelf right in front of you and step onto it." You are blown up.
You are advised when you succeed in clearing the nest or if slimes escape.
When all nests are eradicated '''Nea''' and '''Pyry''' tell you about it.
Return to '''Nikolai''' to get a '''Ice Gladius''' (+1 Luck, +110 Damage) as a reward.

'''Hints:'''

* White Slimes are easier to kill than Blue Slimes. You need enough dexterity (archers) or strength (warriors) to kill them in one hit or you may experience a lot of trouble trying to stay alive. They provide Book Pages and Bottles of Water to heal you and for the quest purpose as well.
* A healer in proximity can be helpful.
* You can buy Bottles of Water in the General Store of Hurnscald.
* You can create Iron Powders yourself using the ''#zukminbirf'' [[Spells|Spell]].

'''Poltergeist Powders are dropped by:'''

* Poltergeist (5%)

'''Spectre Powders are dropped by:'''

'''Reed Bundle are dropped by:'''

'''Book Pages are dropped by:'''

* [[Silkworm]] (50%)

* 1 Silk Gloves (+1 Defense)
* 1 Grimoire (+5 Magic Attack, +30 Spell Points)
* 1 Ice Gladius (+1 Luck, +110 Damage)
* 10,000 Experience Points for cover items
* 10,000 Experience Points per missing page and 1,000 Experience Points for duplicate copies.

Thus a total experience points of 347,000 + RandomNumber * 1,000.
RandomNumber obeys to a rather complicated law. The number of pages you have to give has a computed mean of 59.6 and 7.8 as standard deviation; you have 99% chances that it is between 36 and 83. (RandomNumber will be then 28.6 with 99% chances to be between 5 and 52)

'''Total Cost:'''

# Enter the Inn and go left, you will see Olana in the back. Talk to her and you'll understand that she is the daughter of the Inn's owner. She comes from [[Tulimshar]] and came to [[Hurnscald]] with her two twin daughters, Rossy and Julia.
# You will understand pretty quickly that the mother is afraid for her two daughters that are wandering in the woods near by. You will need to find them for her.
# To find Rossy, you will need to go past Gwendolyn (Mallard's Eye Skill lady), then west into the woods. Talk to Rossy and then come back to the Inn to tell Olana Rossy is fine.
# Come back to see Rossy, she needs help. Collect 10 Cherries for her by killing Snails. Then show them to her. You'll receive 2,000 EXP.
# Now come back to [[Hurnscald]] and talk to Olana, she would like to reward her child, bring her 15 Red Roses. After Olana sees the 15 Red Roses, give them to Rossy. Guess what, Rossy is allergic to Roses, come back to Olana.
# Now take 15 Red Tulips and give them to Rossy (2,500 EXP). You'll get 1,500 GP from Olana because you payer the flowers.
# Talk once more to Rossy and ask her about Julia. Talk again to Rossy, she saw Julia! She was forced to enter the cave west from where Rossy stands, enter that cave! You hear distant screams of fear... freaky.
# Enter the first cave you see inside and talk to Clauquer, he'll teach you several things about the caves. Information like evil forces residing in each of these caves and that you need Roots, healing items and potions to be able to kill these evil forces.
# Take 10 Roots with you and start the battles, you'll need to clean the 9 caves you can see. To start the battle, click on the pentagram and place a root on it. Watch out, you cannot stay too long in these caves! When the cave is clean , you receive 10 [[Boss Points]] (for each cave).
# When you're done with these 9 caves, enter the 10th one, south of this main cave, you'll see a skeleton guarding its entrance. Finish the battle by killing the boss to receive 50 [[Boss Points]]. Pick up the drops. You'll then find Julia, talk to her.
# Julia will give you the Black Boots and 5,000 EXP.
# Now get out and talk to either Rossy or Olana, you'll receive 5,000 GP and 5,000 EXP as a reward. Olana is now very happy you saved her little daughter from the evil Fey Element. You are done with this quest now.
There, one has to say: "marry [fiance]" where [fiance] is the person you want to marry. (Note that only the caster needs to be in the area, the requested partner only needs to be adjacent, which can lie outside of this area.)
# That's it, when you agreed together, you are married! Congratulations!

'''Getting Divorced:'''

# Still at the same place, ask for a divorce. Your partner doesn't necessarily need to be online.
# Pay 500 GP/level to get divorced.
# You can now marry yourself once again.

'''Hints:'''

* This is only a game, this isn't serious!
* If someone doesn't want to be married, leave that person alone, don't insist. Everyone has their own choices.
* Don't use colored words when saying: "marry [fiance]".

'''Reward:'''

* 2 Wedding Rings

'''Total Cost:'''

* 100 GP to get married
* 500 GP/level to get divorced

'''Note''' that you can also get married or divorced in [[Wedding Tulimshar|Tulimshar]] too.

'''Warning to Manaplus users''': A Manaplus-TMW server incompatibility prevents the "marry" declaration to be correctly handled when you use colored text. Set your text color to default before marrying.
