Okay, to start with, Sparrons:

I don't like the bird type traits they've been given. The race is supposed to be the uncontested beauty's of the world, but beaks would make the males ugly; and talons would make the females harpy's!! Maybe my view is a little skewed, but think that we need to think up some more subtle traits that will make them air related without making them hideous. Perhaps they could posses bluish tinged skin, and maybe the females could occasionally posses peacock tails?

That said, Ifriton

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/5440/ifriton01idlehz3.png

In days which have long since been forgotten, the days when the crystals remained whole, the Ifriton lived in a jungle paradise They are said to have lived in a massive city at the foot of a great volcano. The city was said to possess such vast wealth, thanks to the resources they collected from the surrounding jungle, that some joked that the streets could have been paved with gold for only a small fraction of the city's wealth. They lived in this fabulous wealth for some time, but after the Crystal of Flames burst, The massive jungle in which they resided was burnt to cinders, and with it the fabulous wealth they enjoyed for so long was mostly swept away. Most Ifriton decided to continue living there; the jungle had become a volcanic desert, but the Ifriton found it possible to survive in the desert thanks to their resilience against heat and their ability to survive Indefinatly without water, and for great periods of time without food. Ifriton infants were the only ones who truly needed water to live, and they found enough for at least them. They found very life hard for some time, but after living in the barren wastes of their former home for decades, they adapted to life in the desert quite well, finding that they could harvest sustenance mostly from sunlight, and could draw what little food they needed from the corpses of the desert dwelling creatures they found and killed here and there. They decided to rebuild their volcano based kingdom, which they renamed "Gispaa", meaning refuge, because it was never anything more than their latest refuge. Their kingdom never stands in one place for more than a decade or two anymore, before being burned to the ground by the changing lava flows. The area in which Gispaa exists is called Tonori by most races of the world.

Todays Ifriton sometimes seem a bit more stoic than the rest of Mankind, having been hardened to discomfort by there inhospitable home, and to misfortune by the tales of their civilizations fall from grace, which every Ifriton hears many times as a child. Ifriton tend to believe themselves able to survive anywhere, and under any circumstances; and they are considered to be natural born survivors by those who know there kind. "A weak Ifriton is a dead Ifriton," and they are taught this from infancy. Ifriton tend to view luxury as unnecessary and dangerous, as those who become accustomed to luxury tend to become weak, and in turn usually dead. It has been like this as long as anyone can remember. Other races tend to find the Ifriton to be harsh, but the hearty among the other races can make great friends out of an Ifriton, as they are extremely likely to risk their lives to help save the lives of others. They view survival as a group effort, and their code of honor reflects this.

Any woman who has ever been pulled to safety by the strong, leathery hands of an Ifriton has on some level or another lusted after them. The males and females alike tend to be rough, tough, and muscular. The Ifriton observe a culture bound by a complex honor code based around helping as many people survive as possible. This honor code is paramount in the life of every Ifriton, and helps very much to ensure their collective survival. Ifriton technically have two genders like other types of man kind, but the races genders are impossible to tell apart. Romances with other races are forbidden by the Ifriton code of honor, and the Ifriton can tell gender difference by scent, and courtship with the opposite gender is heavily regulated by the Ifriton code of honor. Offspring are raised by the community, and most Ifritons marry and bear offspring before the age of 17. Bearing offspring young and often is considered a great honor.

[combination suggestion for the Talpan descriptions]

Talpan are as tough as a pile of stones, and as steady as the turning of the earth. The Talpan culture values consistency and stability. These beings tend to look at the world from a predominantly practical point of view. Where some people would spend their lives pursuing beauty, travel, or adventure a Talpan would be much more content at home, deep in the underground of Gasaro, living out his life with his close family. Deep beneath Gasaro lies the Talpan kingdom of Redstone. These being rarely venture very far from here unless they absolutely must. This isn't to say that you'll never meet a Talpan abroad, but it will explain why unless you get near their lands, you'll very likely only meet a few in your lifetime.

The Talpan are built for life in the underground, and Redstone has flourished there. Many Talpan are diggers or miners, and the scale of these projects in Redstone is greater than in any other kingdom in the world. The Talpan are able to accomplish such massive operations because they have a keen sense of stability. Any normal Talpan can feel a tunnel's impending collapse, long before it happens. Because they have this keen ability to tell a tunnels weakness, forement tend to be experienced Talpan engineers. However, if Talpan are doing all of the digging, the tunnels are never substandard.

Other races tend to view the Talpan as very down to earth. They are slow to pass judgment, and far slower to act on it, but when they decide to do something they are nearly unstoppable. The Talpan are considered by most to be rather plain in the department of looks. Their skin is usually a dull Grey earth tone, and their eyes tend to be very dark. Talpan tend towards simple hair styles and manners of dress. They are usually easy to talk to, as they are very good listeners, typically being willing to sit and listen to another person talk for hours on end, only speaking if asked a question or otherwise prompted to speak. The Talpan tend to be trim and muscular, due to their practical lifestyles. They are perfectly happy doing manual labor, and most of them do it often.

Like other creatures, Man does not have a singular form. There are currently ten distinct races known to the world, but in the beginning, there were only four. We'll call these four original races "Pure-bloods"..

PURE-BLOODS
Long ago, the Gods accidentally created these races from their relative element. Though a lot has changed since then, each of the four Gods still retains some favor for the race they created.

Tritan
These fishy folk usually live beneath the waves, many of them in Ancea's capital city and its surrounding area. Tritan between the ages of 16-29 normally live abroad, as this is the customary age-range which they devote to travel and exploration. Some return home sooner than others, while a rare few are occasionally coaxed to settle down on dry land. This is why you see Tritan all over the world, but won't often find a permanent Tritan household unless you travel underwater. Also, if you happen to visit the Tritan capital city, you might notice an abundance of children and elderly, with a striking lack of young-adults.

The Tritan Empire developed from a blend of aquatic hunter/gatherer cultures and today, have managed to retain a handful of their fundamentals. Hunting is the primary staple of their society, while agriculture (in terms of crops and farming) tends to be largely ignored. Though they are omnivores, a typical Tritan's diet consists of mostly small sea creatures with a very small amount of wild sea vegetation. Unlike other races, the Tritan's eating habits often exclude foreign foods, even considering delicacies. Most of the food they eat, comes from the sea.

The elders are the leaders of the Tritan culture; they are the disciplinarians, teachers and the caregivers. The children on the other hand, are the hunters and gatherers; childhood for a normal Tritan consists of keeping food in stock and listening to stories, told by the elders. Before the Tritan Empire helped to form the nation of Ancea, there was no such thing as a conventional school. Even now, the only actual school that you can find underwater is a branch of the World Academy.
Sparron
The area which the Sparron call home used to be a wide stretch of mountains and canyons, dotted with light woodlands. After the Crystal of Air shattered, all of that beautiful land separated from the continent and floated up in to the sky. Most Sparron decided to continue living there; a bit of wind and some heights never hurt a winged-person, after all. Most Sparron don't begin to grow wings until puberty, but once they start to come in, they tend to receive a lot of attention and care. Any self-respecting Sparron prides their wings above most other things.

Sparron sometimes seem a bit more self-righteous and boastful than the rest of Mankind, but such egotism is simply a product of their society. Individually, each Sparron believes itself to be the most beautiful and VERY rarely offers compliments to others, for any reason. To Sparron, who can not imagine doling out such pleasantries, compliments are often believed to be sarcastic and impolite. It has been like this as long as anyone can remember. Any person who understands this aspect of Sparron culture is usually able to put up with it, well enough at least, to make a friend out of a Sparron.

The Sparron are generally quite beautiful though, spotted with colorful feathers. It is simply their conceited attitude that drives others away; they're usually tough to hold a meaningful conversation with, but they're very easy on the eyes. Sparron women are the uncontested beauties of the world and are pursued by males of other races, just as often as Sparron males. Females usually don't have beaks, which is seen as a masculine trait; males on the other hand, often do not have talons, which is seen as a feminine trait.

These people have been calling the volcanic desert, "home" since it was a jungle. Though today, Ifriton can be found all over the world, most live in Tonori, primarily at the base of its largest volcano in a kingdom called "Gispaa"
Deep within the mountainous landscape of Gasaro lies the kingdom of Redstone, home of the Talpan people. They thrive here above all others, because they're built for life in the underground. Talpan are usually involved in large-scale digging and mining operations, to benefit from their keen sense of stability; any normal Talpan can feel a tunnel's impending collapse, long before it happens. Because of that, foremen tend to be experienced Talpan engineers. However, if Talpan are doing all of the digging, the tunnels are rarely substandard.
These being rarely venture very far from their homes unless they absolutely must. This isn't to say that you'll never meet a Talpan abroad, but it will explain why unless you get near their lands, you'll very likely only meet a few in your lifetime.
Other races tend to view the Talpan as very down to earth. They are slow to pass judgment, and far slower to act on it, but when they decide to do something they are nearly unstoppable. Talpan tend towards simple hair styles and manners of dress. The Talpan tend to be trim and muscular, due to their practical lifestyles. They are perfectly happy doing manual labor, and most of them do it often.
Dead Orelon had been prized items for years, but by the time poaching became obvious, modern governments had begun taking shape; the problem was dealt rather effectively. In most civilized areas, it's legal to possess and trade the ore of a dead Orelon, but it's assumed that the Orelon died of natural causes and you obtained it somehow afterward.

That said, Ifriton

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2021/ifriton01idlees4.png

In days which have long since been forgotten, the days when the gods still ruled the realm, the Ifriton lived in a jungle paradise They are said to have lived in a massive city at the foot of a great volcano. The city was said to possess such vast wealth thanks to the resources they collected from the surrounding jungle, some joked that the streets could have been paved with gold for only a small fraction of the city's wealth. They lived in this fabulous wealth for eon's, but after the Crystal of Flames was destroyed, The massive jungle in which they resided was burnt to cinders, and with it the fabulous wealth they enjoyed for so long was mostly swept away. Most Ifriton decided to continue living there; the jungle had become a volcanic desert, but the Ifriton found it possible to survive in the desert thanks to their resilience against heat and their ability to survive Indefinably without water, and for great periods of time without food. Ifriton infants were the only ones who truly needed water to live, and they found enough for at least them. They found life hard for some time, but after living in the barren wastes of their former home for some time, they adapted to life in the desert quite well, finding that they could harvest sustenance mostly from sunlight, and could draw what little food they needed from the corpses of the desert dwelling creatures they found here and there. They decided to rebuild their volcano base kingdom, which they renamed "Gispaa", meaning refuge.

Ifriton tend to view luxury as unnessasary and dangerous, as those who become accustomed to luxury tend to become weak, and in turn usually dead. It has been like this as long as anyone can remember. Other races tend to find the Ifriton to be harsh, but the hearty among the other races can make great friends out of an Ifriton, as they are extreemly likely to risk their lives to help save the lives of others. They view survival as a group effort.

The Ifriton female is not generally considered attractive by memebers of other races, but the males are the envy of every woman who has ever been pulled out of a tough situation by their strong leathery hands.

---
[combination suggestion for the Talpan descriptions]

Talpan are as tough as a pile of stones, and as steady as the turning of the earth. The Talpan culture values consistency and stability. These beings tend to look at the world from a predominantly practical point of view. Where some people would spend their lives pursuing beauty, travel, or adventure a Talpan would be much more content at home, deep in the underground of Gasaro, living out his life with his close family.

Some return home sooner than others, while a rare few are occasionally coaxed to settle down on dry land.

Talpan are as tough as a pile of stones, and as steady as the turning of the earth. The Talpan culture values consistancy and stability. These beings tend to look at the world from a predominantly practical point of view. Where some people would spend their lives pursuing beauty, travel, or adventure a Talpan would be much more content at home, living out his life with his close family.

That said, Ifriton

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/2021/ifriton01idlees4.png

Cliffs and a few small plateaus separate the valley below from the coast. Various summits can be reached without climbing the rock-face, only by entering the caverns within the cliffs, but beware; the caves can be very dangerous. === the valley ===

From the cliffs, a waterfall feeds a river that runs south, where it eventually meets a lake. Along the lake and bisected by the river lies the economic hub of the continent; Trade City.

A highway leaves Trade City its east and west gates. Following the road out of town in an easterly direction takes you through farmland and gradually in to hotter climate. Traveling instead to the west, you would quickly find the edge of the great forest.

the savanna & the desert
concepts: beach resort, fishing village, Sonbral

This dry area has very little ground water and only a few small aquifers and springs, but if you look in the right places, you can find fresh cacti which can be tapped for water. There are many old farm houses, barns and outbuildings scattered throughout the dust; many nearly or completely buried by mountains of silt and debris. Much of the landscape is still littered with the remnants of the forest that once thrived here.

The people of Sonbral claim ownership over the entire basin, though their city sits along the southern rim. The warriors of Sonbral use the desert for training, but other citizens also had their reasons for exploring this less than hospitable region. Shaman hunt for sacred herbs, while hunters hunt for dinner.

the forest & the jungle
concepts: Canopy, logging camps, woodland village, Zartam

The general area is separated by a river that flows west from the lake to the ocean. The woodlands on the northern side of the river are forest class, while the southern side's woodlands are jungle. Aside from this river, there are at least 4 other significantly sized rivers and quite a few streams, spread out across the region. Two mountains lie entirely within the jungle perimeter; the southernmost of the two is the world's largest known deposit of fool's gold.. though there are tales of sizable amounts of REAL gold being found, as well.

There are generally two modes of travel through the woodland regions, the many paths and roads, or the bridge network. The roads get you there, but the bridges are a bit more direct, making them a bit quicker. The bridges began in the town of Canopy, who's local government still maintains responsibility over them. To gain access to the bridge network, you must go to Canopy and obtain a pass.

Zartam is the senior power in the area. The entire jungle is sometimes referred to simply as "Zartam" because of its diligent control over the general area.

style="background:#f1eede;" align="left" valign="top" |
<font color="red">HELP THINK!</font> ..I want there to be something other than surroundings distinguishing forest-folk from jungle-folk.. perhaps even just some sort of cultural wedge, like a strong difference in beliefs. I'm not sure if I want the two sides to be feuding, but that's a possibility. An idea that I had was that one side is attempting to get rid of the loggers, while the other side is doing nothing. That's kinda boring though. Any ideas for this would be appreciated. Also, I don't have enough planned for the woodlands.. so don't be afraid to put some thought in to the area.

Suggestion: Maybe the Jungle folks consider woman to be inferior beings, and value strength and brutality
whereas forest folks consider them to be holy bringers of life, valuing wisdom and cunning?

the two rivers & the swamp
This strip of land separates two formidable rivers. Somehow, the river on the west runs south, while the river on the east runs north. This circular flow has contributed a great deal to successful exploitation of the river, for shipping and travel. In the south, the two rivers meet the sea; this is the only safe access to and from the continent, by sea. This is what makes Trade City's location so vital; boats can come up the eastern river, dock at Trade City's harbor to unload/load cargo and make an easy exit down the western river, back out to sea. The two rivers are also used for local travel. An individual can go it alone with a boat of their own, or for an easier time, one can book passage on a ferry.

Back to the swamp.. though it's mostly trees and mucky water, a few caves can be found. The area used to be a blend of savanna and woodlands, but an alchemist's experiment turned the area in to a swamp. The experiment employed the use of magical spores, which were supposed to grow in to mushroom houses. Instead, the spores (which were probably handled improperly) grew in to fungus creatures, which quickly multiplied. Shortly after this blunder, the swamp began to form and the fungus creatures quickly overtook the strip. Zartam's council of elders banished the alchemist, who then promptly disappeared. They also ordered that a group be sent to the swamp, to contain the problem. Those people managed to learn to live in the swamp and continue their effort in pest control; the first generation of children could be being born there now.

the island off of the northeast coast
This wooded island is full of ferocious beasts. Only a few people live here and only they could tell you exactly why. A tribe inhabiting this place probably have some special spells or abilities to teach. We could place a small volcano here, if we really wanted to get cliched with the whole "tribal islanders" theme.

the southern mountainrange
Crossing the mountains is a challenge, but the road that passes through them is said to be a thief checkpoint. Rivers running between the mountains can be navigated by a small raft or boat, but this also carries its own set of risks. There are mining projects currently active in the area, leaving abandoned tunnels behind them.

History
the landmass is revealed
When the Gods escaped from the Crystals, the flow of elemental energy was altered. In addition to releasing vast amounts of previously unavailable energy, the environment was severely distorted. Northwest of Tonori, a storm raged for over a decade, causing extreme turbulence in the sea below. This seemingly normal turbulence then changed in to an enormous whirlpool. All travel through the area was interrupted.

The storm eventually relented and the sea calmed. Much to the world's surprise, the whirlpool that had disrupted travel for so long, seemed to give birth to an entirely new landmass. What started with a few explorers quickly expanded in to groups. A few small settlements, forts and colonies came and went and before long, people began to stay and raise families.

farming ruins the east
At first, the eastern half of the continent was a bounty of wild flora, allowing people to perform a passive form of agriculture; gathering. There were a few controlled crops, but they were small and uncommon. Most of the resources gathered from the area were of a wild variety. When the wild fruits, vegetables and herbs failed to output, people became impatient. When it started to seriously impact the area's food supply, people began to clear the land for farming. Much to the protest of woodland folk, most of the eastern forest was destroyed to make way for farms.

Though farming went well for a while, the hot winds from Tonori proved to be too harsh for the eastern edge of the continent. Without its previous blanket of woodlands to protect it, the area degraded to a dusty, desert waste and the farming days were over. Many of the people moved west, some attempted to leave the continent entirely. Some were content to stay on damaged ground, preferring the lifestyle for its rugged appeal.

modern-day boundaries begin to form
After the end of a small war to the southeast, a number of dislocated warriors sought refuge with a small group nomads, who were trying to survive in the new desert. The disorganized nomads realized that they warriors had much wisdom to offer them and insisted on receiving their guidance. Some of the warriors stayed and became integrated in to the nomad's group. Soon after, the group founded the town of Sonbral.

After taking in many refugees from the farming disaster, Zartam became more recognizable as a city. Though its boundaries tend to fluctuate the most, it is the oldest, active settlement known on Argaes.

Trade between Sonbral and Zartam was non-existent for a while, but eventually a trading post was established midway between both regions. Over time, this trading post attracted its own community. The community built a village and over a bit more time, the village became Trade City.

Today, Trade City's people have developed a new but powerful government called the Republic of Argaes, which seeks to control the continent's economy.

Suggestion for Talpan Description/Racial Traits
Talpan are as tough as a pile of stones, and as steady as the turning of the earth. The Talpan culture values consistancy and stability. These beings tend to look at the world from a predominantly practical point of view. Where some people would spend their lives pursuing beauty, travel, or adventure a Talpan would be much more content at home, living out his life with his close family.

They are perfectly happy doing manual labor, and most of them do it often.

required traits: horns and scales of stone on their backs
special optional traits: Shoulder spikes, Extra stone plates (On commonly used muscles like forearms and pectorals)
IRC log from September 10th 2006
This is the discussion about races that has been initialized by Dabes article World backstory (irrelevant side discussions omitted):
<pre>
[15:36] Crush__: dabe just posted a world creation story on the wiki. i really like it: http://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/World_backstory
[15:50] b_lindeijer: Crush__: Yeah, I like it too.
[15:50] Crush__: What i like especially is that the truth about the creation of the world is not known to the humans and that their believes are false. So we can create an epic quest line about finding out the truth about the nature of the world and its creation step by step.
[15:51] Crush__: this could be directly linked to the quest to develop magic skills. the player researches the nature of the elements to gain more powerful spells and during this process he finds out that everything he seemed to know about the world was false
[15:53] b_lindeijer: Yeah might be a nice idea. Seems complex to realize in practice though.
[15:55] Crush__: i imagine it that way:
[15:55] Crush__: there are a lot of mage npc's that give you a tutorial about magic in general and give you the first elemental spell
[15:56] Crush__: and then they tell you to visit the temple of the element to learn better spells
[15:56] Crush__: in the temple a priest tells you to do some quests
[15:56] Crush__: to gain better spells
[15:57] Crush__: during these quests you learn pieces after pieces about the history
[15:57] Crush__: you learn about the ancient race of the specific element and eventually you even meet the spirit
[15:58] Crush__: when you met the spirits of all death elements or all life elements you culd do a quest to even meet the spirits of life and death in person
[15:58] Crush__: and thus learning the ultimate spells
[16:00] b_lindeijer: Alright.
[16:00] b_lindeijer: As I understood it though, the player will be able to choose any of the 10 races eventually.
[16:00] b_lindeijer: But most of this could still be done.
[16:00] silene: it's a bit sad that world history is restricted to mage players (or do we expect every player to use magic?)
[16:01] Crush__: i undersood it that the races are extinct and only humans exist as the offsprings of the races.
[16:01] b_lindeijer: There are the 8 races, the humans and the demons.
[16:01] Crush__: maybe fighter characters could learn special attacks instead
[16:02] b_lindeijer: Together they banish the gods.
[16:03] silene: at least that's what they believe, maybe the gods banished them in an isolated world
[16:03] b_lindeijer: Uh the backstory is what we should take as truth I think. :)
[16:04] ElvenProgrammer: you call it faith
[16:04] b_lindeijer: What man believes is described in "Man Rebuilds Civilization".
[16:04] b_lindeijer: They don't really know that they banished the gods, actually.
[16:11] Crush__: well, maybe i just imagined to read that the old races are all extinct because i don't like the idea of batmen and turtlemen running around and like extinct races because they give some mystical flair to it
[16:12] Crush__: why isn't dabe here? he could clarify it.
[16:15] b_lindeijer: I actually know Dabe didn't mean the races to die, since he has also described attribute modifiers for each of these races.
[16:16] Crush__: where did he do this?
[16:16] b_lindeijer: Still, the story is open for criticism so if you want to suggest them to be extinct you can do that.
[16:16] Crush__: i'm doing
[16:16] b_lindeijer: Not all his work is open for criticism yet, he publishes as he wishes.
[16:18] b_lindeijer: Would you prefer there to be no different races to choose from?
[16:19] Crush__: well, i think some of the races are quite unplayable
[16:19] b_lindeijer: The idea is that they're all rather alike. They'll all have to fit basically the same clothes, for example.
[16:20] Crush__: rather alike? to me it sounds as if some of the races are not even humanoid.
[16:21] Modanung: I'm not sure if this is the latest version, but this is how I see them: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/Modanung/tmw_races.png
[16:22] Modanung: Space without the fuzzy effect though
[16:22] Modanung: And not sure about time yet either
[16:22] ElvenProgrammer: where did this one came out? impressive
[16:22] Modanung: (He basically has a clock slammed into his forehead)
[16:23] ElvenProgrammer: Modanung: i really love you
[16:24] Platyna: Modanung: Nice, but could we have some non spooky races too?
[16:24] b_lindeijer: Modanung: Yeah, the story describes the time race as being turtle-like. :)
[16:24] Platyna: For girls?
[16:24] Modanung: Platyna: There will be female variants
[16:24] Modanung: b_lindeijer: Hm ok
[16:24] Platyna: I don't want to look like a reptile...
[16:24] Platyna: Or a Frankenstein.
[16:24] Modanung: Platyna: Then don't be fire race
[16:24] Platyna: Modanung: Yes, but these races are spooky.
[16:24] ElvenProgrammer: Platyna: then choose human race
[16:25] Platyna: Great, o we will have a choice - look like a bad guy from Star Wars or to be a human?
[16:25] ElvenProgrammer: exactly
[16:25] Platyna: :(
[16:25] b_lindeijer: I really like them. I just don't get why they are all wearing exactly the same underwear.
[16:25] Crush__: there are some rather nice looking races between them
[16:26] Platyna: That red guy looks like our vice-prime minister Andrzej Lepper.
[16:26] Crush__: like the light race or the birdmen race
[16:26] ElvenProgrammer: yeah the one i like the less ;P
[16:26] ElvenProgrammer: or maybe least
[16:26] Modanung: b_lindeijer: You want water race to have seaweed pants and earth race to have no pants because they're blind anyway?
[16:27] Crush__: the underwear is quite secondary considering that it will be covered by the equipment most of the time
[16:27] b_lindeijer: I think none of them should wear underwear. :P
[16:28] b_lindeijer: Oh that Lepper seems like a friendly guy.
[16:28] Modanung: b_lindeijer: I don't think any of them should be scottish
[16:29] b_lindeijer: I just want to have the freedom to wear a slip without having a boxers showing through.
[16:30] Modanung: b_lindeijer: Then create a female character :)
[16:30] b_lindeijer: Oh this game has no room for creativity!
[16:30] Crush__: to get back about the elemental races topic
[16:30] Crush__: and their playability
[16:30] Modanung: Crush__: Please do :)
[16:31] Crush__: how about that the races are extinct but the quest is about reviewing them
[16:31] Crush__: so at the beginning everyone can only create human characters
[16:31] Modanung: I think they should be playable
[16:31] Crush__: and you unlock the ability to create non human characters
[16:31] ElvenProgrammer: i guess our players will have no time to play if we allow so much customization :P
[16:31] Crush__: by doing quests
[16:31] Crush__: so you basically have to earn the privilege to create non human characters
[16:32] m[a]tt: Modanung: cool@races oO i want the wingsone
[16:32] Crush__: so we make sure that most player characters will be human
[16:33] b_lindeijer: Alright, well I think it's an interesting idea anyway.
[16:36] Modanung: Yea, but it would mean humans would be the main race in all realms...
[16:37] Modanung: And only players could be different races
[16:44] b_lindeijer: I think it would be interesting to have each race to be rather prominent in his own realm, and that there could be hostilities between them.
[16:47] silene: hostilities between races or between realms (i would prefer it if it was hostilities between realms)
[16:48] Modanung: Agreed with both
[16:49] b_lindeijer: Both kind of hostilities could exist simultaneously, which can make things interesting.
[16:49] ElvenProgrammer: then let's work hard to make this happen
[16:51] silene: b_lindeijer: the one i'm not really happy with is racial hostility, i wouldn't mind guild (or whatever) hostility, for example, to have two kinds of hostility
[16:52] Modanung: silene: What wrong with racial hostility? I mean not that I approve of racism. But it's as real as inter realm hostility.
[16:53] Modanung: silene: Expecially before modern times
[16:54] silene: Modanung: that's more of an ethic point of view, we won't have control over how old (as in influencable) people who play the game are; but this is not a strong point of view, i can live with racial hostility
[16:55] Modanung: silene: Ok... I think it's ok as long as we don't have real-world races or religions
[16:56] b_lindeijer: silene: Ah true, the combination I proposed might as well be region and guild based, since they are also rather independent of each other.
[16:57] b_lindeijer: Indeed region based hostility will have rather the same meaning as racial hostility, but well less explicitly so.
[17:25] Crush__: hostilities between races, hostilities between realms, hostilities between guilds, hostilities between organisations... isn't that a little bit too much conflict?
[17:26] b_lindeijer: Crush__: We discussed only two as far as I know.
[17:27] Crush__: two also lead to awkward situations. what is when someone is my enemy race but in the same realm like me? is he my friend or my enemy?
[17:27] b_lindeijer: Crush__: Yep, that's actually what makes it more interesting.
[17:28] Crush__: so you basically find a reason to attack anyone. pvp anarchy. hooray.
[17:28] b_lindeijer: Not really.
[17:29] Crush__: so how do you think that it will work in practice?
[17:29] b_lindeijer: So we were considering conflicts between regions and conflicts between guilds, as far as I know.
[17:31] b_lindeijer: Other than that, what do I know about how it would work?
[17:33] Crush__: well, you all know my opinion about faction vs. faction pvp
[17:34] Modanung: b_lindeijer: Nope
[17:35] b_lindeijer: I can't really say I do. But well, there's just too many discussion going on about PvP systems since at least a year already, and as far as I know we're still not even close to implementing any of that.
[17:35] Crush__: well, then we should maybe go back to the races idea
[17:35] b_lindeijer: Let's first get PvP combat to work nicely in the first place, and then look into deciding how and where players can actually fight.
[17:35] b_lindeijer: That's not really part of either server or client development anyway.
[17:36] Modanung: I think racial conflict is more of a social thing... no big battle or something... just brawls and prejudice...
[17:36] Modanung: And maybe bonuses
[17:37] Modanung: Like the trait system we discussed
[17:37] Crush__: about my proposal earlier that the races are extinct or almost extinct and player have to reanimate them by making quests to gain the ability to create them...
[17:38] Crush__: it would mean that in the beginning all charachters will play humans but over the time more and more other race chars will appear
[17:38] Crush__: and in the end the humans will only be a minority
[17:38] Crush__: this has two big advantages
[17:38] Crush__: a) the players actions change the world
[17:39] Crush__: b) more complexity for advanced players, less complexity for beginners
[17:39] Modanung: Different races doesn't have to make things more complex
[17:39] b_lindeijer: What about the thing about the timespan of a player being maybe one week up to one month (some rare cases longer), and players joining continuously?
[17:40] b_lindeijer: How does that work with races distribution globally?
[17:40] silene: b_lindeijer: you mean that your character dies after one month?
[17:40] Crush__: lifespan? do you intend that player characters die after some time?
[17:40] b_lindeijer: No I mean I think most people get bored with the game after one month.
[17:40] Modanung: b_lindeijer: That's rare with MMORPGs :)
[17:40] b_lindeijer: Not with this one.
[17:41] silene: too bad, i thought it was actually a good idea :)
[17:41] b_lindeijer: At least not at the moment. But well we can all go blame that on the alpha status, sure.
[17:41] Modanung: b_lindeijer: Not even now
[17:41] Crush__: most people play mmorpgs for months or even years
[17:41] m[a]tt: silene: yeah. the beginning is the often the funniest part
[17:41] Modanung: b_lindeijer: We have adicts even now
[17:41] m[a]tt: b_lindeijer: yeah like me
[17:41] Modanung: Like m[a]tt
[17:42] b_lindeijer: Modanung: It's very easy to know that addicts are the rare cases I mentioned. You can probably count them on two hands, all addicts we gathered after two years.
[17:42] Modanung: And because it's free people won't stop for financial reasons
[17:43] Crush__: bjorn, the current game is boring as hell. i can't understand the people who are playing it anyway.
[17:43] b_lindeijer: While we have 18.000 accounts now on the server.
[17:43] b_lindeijer: Crush__: Indeed.
[17:43] Modanung: Of which maybe 100-200 can be called active
[17:44] m[a]tt: b_lindeijer: how many of then were active in the last motnhs?
[17:44] b_lindeijer: Modanung: I think that's a rather high estimate.
[17:44] b_lindeijer: m[a]tt: I don't know whether eAthena keeps those statistics.
[17:44] m[a]tt: oO no pixel based movement :/
[17:44] b_lindeijer: And I'd have to parse this rather strange file...
[17:47] Crush__: about the global distribution of not human races: when only player characters are nonhuman they would be equally distributed over the whole world. even when they spawn at different locations. the only way to archive a concentration of races in different areas would be to make them so differently in gameplay that they are optimized for different level areas
[17:47] Crush__: but the question is: do we want that? isn't a multicultural mix more interesting?
[17:48] silene: Crush__: they don't have to be optimized, they could simply get better prices in store of their realms/races
[17:50] Modanung: Crush__: I think it would be interesting to have semi-multicultural realms
[17:50] Crush__: having common npc's of nonhuman races from the beginnig would be quite awkward when the races are meant to be extinct
[17:50] b_lindeijer: Also, they might heal most when eating their own kinds of food, which would be cheap and abundant in their own realm.
[17:50] Modanung: And the race you choose defines the place you start.
[17:51] Crush__: but how about that: immunity to weather effects in their region
[17:51] Modanung: I think Dabe also suggest better mobility
[17:51] Crush__: there could be weather effects that give a malus to everyone but certain races are immune against them
[17:51] b_lindeijer: Dabe had the idea to reduce cost of moving in own region.
[17:52] Crush__: earth creatures are immune against sandstorms in the earth region, ice men against blizards in the ice region, fire men immune against fire storms in the fire region and so on
[17:52] m[a]tt: we could predefine that race a is a enemy of race b, players could try to change that...or not(like in gta with that respect point thingys)..
[17:55] Crush__: we got opposing elements so it would just be logical that the same applies to the races. like dark men and light men are enemies or water men and fire men.
[17:56] Crush__: i'll edit the races article to mention the races in the world backstory. i will also collect the ideas posted here and put them there as optional suggestions
[17:57] silene: i wouldn't mind better race names than "dark men", "light men", "fire men", "water men", etc :)
[18:12] Crush__: but we all agree on that the elemental races should have a bonus on using and defending against their element and a malus on using and defending against other elements.
[18:12] Crush__: don't we?
[18:15] b_lindeijer: Crush__: Yeah, I think we do.
[18:51] d4BE: Crush: about your idea for unlocking, I had a very similar idea that Rapier always shoots down (I tried to apply it to a MUD we were working on once) .. where you would grow as a user-level as well as on a character-level..
[18:51] d4BE: Your account would begin only allowing Humans and possibly Demons.. perhaps starting in different locations.. as you progressed, you would be allowed more character slots and more choices for races.
Looking great so far. Quite exciting, watching everything slowly come together. -- Pauan 19:44, 5 July 2007 (CEST)
They are perfectly happy doing manual labor, and most of them do it often.

required traits: horns and scales of stone on their backs
special optional traits: Shoulder spikes, Extra stone plates (On commonly used muscles like forearms and pectorals)
IRC log from September 10th 2006
This is the discussion about races that has been initialized by Dabes article World backstory (irrelevant side discussions omitted):
<pre>
Thanks for the tip Crush. I'll post proposed changes to this area from now on.

Okay, I suggest that a fifth element be added: Life or Aether, just because it seems like it would improve the complexity of the legend to have the number 5 rather than 4, although the lot would be fine without it, it's just a suggestion.

Also, the Wiki contains grammatical and logical errors, one of which being that the combined power of mankind finally rivals that of the gods both before the gods sleep, and after they awaken. Also, the names of the elemental races should be explained before the part where the names are relied upon to know what's going on, such as the part where the races speak to god. It's not clear what's going on, because the races haven't yet been revealed to have those names.

Also, it's never explained that the elemental proto-humans melded into one species during The Age of Ancient Mankind, though it becomes evident that somehow there is just the one non-elemental human race left when there is no futher mention of the elemental races in either the Wiki, or the race selection of the game. Also I've not seen any other races in the game. ^_^ I just think it should be stated that they blended into one race.

Thanks,

: The 'elemental races' are listed elsewhere on the wiki: http://wiki.themanaworld.org/index.php/Creatures#Mankind (they're called pure races here).
: Thank you, that's actually fairly illuminating. So they're going to be implemented eventually then? I had been under the assumption that they melded together. Having multiple races would be nice though. Can I suggest a race of Sprites, too? They were my favorite race in SoM, and I'd like to see them crop up here, too. :) &mdash;Kemrin 06:08, 30 January 2008 (CET)

The attack itself is very weak, but the inoculated poison stays for long and takes many HPs from the player until the poison dilutes or you take an antidote. Take the poison (item) to a specialized alchemist, he will produce a fine antidote. This was my first contribution in color for TMW ;).

"Long ago, the world was kept in a reasonably calm and balanced state by four magic crystals. One day however, all of that changed when the Crystals suddenly shattered, spreading shards across the world. Gradually since then, monsters have been reported everywhere that crystal shards have been found, attacking anyone they encounter. Placed in clear opposition to the growing threat of monsters, Mankind blindly seeks the crystal shards, unaware of the power they hold."

A vague introductory explanation like that, is great for a game opener. However, it should make sense that some aspects of such an introduction, might be exaggerated or even false. The prehistoric timeline should serve as a resource for how the universe ACTUALLY came to be. False beliefs about this sort of things should be a primary aspect of life on this world.

Prehistory
The exact amount of time spanned in the prehistoric era is unknown. For this reason, events therein will not be marked with dates.

the Universe takes form
In the beginning, existed an empty plane of dark space. Nothing ever happened here and it seemed like it would stay that way forever. Then in the center of the darkness, the universe suddenly began to emerge from one immeasurable point of pure and boundless energy, willing it's self into existence.

the Elements come in to existence
Continuing along a series of paradoxical events, what had begun as one point of energy, then split forever, into four *Five* new energies, which immediately rushed outward to fill the universe. These energies, called elements, make up and give definition to reality and if manacled together, can take the form of distinct sub-elemental products.

the elements: WATER, AIR, FIRE, EARTH, *LIFE/AETHER*
common products: ICE, LIGHTNING, METAL, WOOD

the Spirits & the Gods are created
The elements flew wildly about for some time, perpetually crashing apart and mixing together. During this period, every possible elemental product was eventually created and subsequently destroyed to such an infinite point, that the original four elements seemed to reform at the end of the cycle. Instead of repeating the chaotic transmutation that once again seemed inevitable, the elements began to coalesce uniformly into four *five*, separate masses. After a moment of stillness, an implosion of elemental energies revealed four *five* condensed masses of pure elemental energy, each located at a fixed point, in what now seemed like very empty space.

What would eventually be called "Spirits" suddenly and of course, quite miraculously, came in to existence. Miraculous as they might have been, the Spirits actually possessed no overt intelligence, because they did not exist within the boundaries of the mental plane. They did however, have a certain unconscious purpose and intent; more of a natural aversion toward imbalance in the universe. Unfortunately for the universe, all of the elemental energy it would need to have physical substance was now on the outer rim of the mental plane. With no creative thought, there could be no conceivable future.

So, in an act of pure instinct, each spirit simultaneously expelled half of its energy toward the heart of the universe. The four streams of energy managed to remain tethered to each spirit, even after plunging through the dark void of space and puncturing the mental plane. As they blasted through the astral fog, in to conscious existence, each elemental projection became immediately self-aware and began to question their own purpose. With no one to instruct them, the new entities were left to devise their own understanding of the universe, beginning with the first linguistic associations; they called their creators "Spirits" and referred to themselves as "Gods".

the Dawn of Mortal Life
The Gods had little else to do but spend their time creating lower-lifeforms and of course, places for them to live. Despite the fact that the universe was now brimming with life, the Gods were experiencing an uncomfortable feeling, that their seemingly endless wells of energy, might be running-dry; the Spirits were in fact, almost out of power.

Because the Gods were in a way, the corporeal avatars of the Spirits, they shared a subconscious respect for universal balance. The Gods knew without fully understanding why, that in order for the universe to remain intact, the Spirits must always retain at least some of their energy supply. The only way the Gods could hope to reclaim some of this supply, was to begin sacrificing their creations, many of which were already becoming boring to them.

It is during this almost unimaginable massacre, that the Gods lost all fundamental respect for lower-life. However, even after the arduous task of deactivating so many lifeforces, there was still work for the Gods to do; husks of spent, mortal life now littered the cosmos. The Gods would either have to wait for the elemental refuse to decompose naturally, a process that could take millions of years just to begin, or devise an alternative strategy for recycling dead matter.

After a long argument, the Gods agreed on a small roster of creatures to reanimate and did so. The mounds of dead matter were then tossed rather carelessly toward the Spirits, where they were absorbed and immediately broken down to raw elemental energy, then redistributed evenly back toward the Gods. Well supplied for the moment, with fresh energy and a clean working environment, the Gods returned to their experiments.

the World is created
After another long stretch of time, the Spirits were once again running low on energy. During their last crisis however, the Gods had devised a preemptive solution for this impending situation. There were still many physical realms leftover from the recently eradicated creatures. The plan was to break all of these down and finally construct a single set of realms; a world.

The Gods once again combed their mortal ranks for the most stagnant and boring creatures, ending each of their lives without much thought and even less remorse. With a newly consolidated roster, all of mortal life could now be placed comfortably on a single world. Once again of course, there was the annoyance of gathering the recently deceased; a task which the Gods had grown to feel quite beyond performing.

the Sun & the Moon are created
Not looking forward to cleaning up the universe, the Gods became motivated to design a routine system to collect dead matter, faster and much more automatically than before. Since their normal creations seemed somehow ill-equipped to handle such an important task, the Gods developed two unique objects capable of filling their needs. One called "the Sun" was created by the spirits of Air and Fire, while a polar opposite called "the Moon" was created by the spirits of Water and Earth. When they were completed, both objects were placed in orbit around the world, where they would chase each other forever.

The Sun burned with such ferocity and brightness, that the black of the sky directly around it became illuminated to a light-blue. With this intense light came heat, which warmed the surface of the world as it passed. A number of environmental changes were gradually taking place because of this, but the Gods did not take notice. What was important to the them, was that this new heat served to bake any dead matter laying about, greatly accelerating the usually long process of decay.

The Moon on the other hand, was made to absorb stray energy. Emitting a much softer glow than the Sun, the Moon hangs about a dark sky, collecting the smallest elemental particles as it passes. The Moon then releases each particular element out toward its relative spirit, where it is again recycled, so each god can continue to play without the responsibility of cleaning up after themselves.

Mankind is created
The Gods were very pleased with themselves. They celebrated all throughout the first Day, enjoying the bright sky that it now offered. When the Moon arrived however, it ushered darkness back in to the sky and the Gods began to feel tired. As they drifted off to sleep, each god dreamed of life in the form of their favorite creature. The God of Water dreamed that it was swimming, like a fish. The God of Air dreamed that it was soaring, like a bird. The God of Fire dreamed that it was basking in an intense heat, like a salamander. The God of Earth dreamed that it was tunneling through the dirt, like a mole.

To their surprise, the Gods were suddenly jarred awake by four new beings, which they had each created in their sleep. These new beings, which became generally referred to as "Man" shared the mental potential of the Gods, but absorbed energy naturally through the environment, like the mortals. Like the Gods after their own birth, Man began to question its existence. In a way the Spirits were never able to, the Gods began to interact with Man.

The Gods gradually taught Man to manipulate the elements around them, mostly out of curiosity, to see how far their potential could reach. In time the world once again became dark, and the Gods once again began to feel tired. Aware of this fatigue, Man approached the Gods with a collective request, that went something like this:

Talpan: Privacy is wonderful, but I am somehow starting to feel lonely.

Sparron: Yes, it would be nice to have someone new to spend time with.

GODS: We would like to do this for you, but there is not enough energy to make many more, like you all.

Ifriton: Then use our own energy to create them!

Tritan: Agreed; life is not worth living without proper company.

GODS: It shall be done. Farewell.

With that, not only Man but every mortal creature was divided into two genders, one called 'male' and the other 'female.' Through a process of reproduction, their traits would be randomized and bestowed upon a new life form, created in their combined image. In this way, each mortal was able to create life, without assistance from the Gods. Evolution would then take place over time, considering a species was able to survive from generation to generation.

the Age of Ancient Mankind
Under the inexperienced care of Mankind, the world eventually began to fall in to disrepair. With the Gods asleep, there was no one to consciously keep the elements segregated. Fire seeped too close to Earth, slow-cooking much of it to rock. Air and Water combined, forming fog and clouds. Essentially, the realms began to blend together. Instead of four segregated realms of pure elemental alignment, there was now one large realm of constantly changing structure, where all of the elements and resulting products were allowed to flow together.

the Gods Awaken
After many generations, the combined power of all mortal life finally rivaled that of the Gods, whom Mankind had nearly forgotten. One day however, the Gods finally woke from their long sleep, only to find their realms in complete disorder. Creatures which the Gods could not begin to classify roamed the world unchecked and uncontrolled, preying on one another to avoid starvation. Rather than rectify this problem, Mankind catered to its own whims. New ways of thinking had been adopted during the Gods' slumber; greed, jealousy, deceit.. These unattractive features made the Gods angry toward Mankind, which made them feel a mixture of attachment and betrayal towards their own particular version of Man. (i.e.: The God of Water still loved the Tritan and so forth with the other 3 Gods and Races)

the Great Conflict
The Gods attempted to make themselves known to the new and unfamiliar generation of mortals, but Mankind no longer believed in them. This generally disgusted the Gods, who now viewed Mankind as arrogant and illogical. Hopeful that they would be able to salvage something from the mess that had taken shape, the Gods attempted to subtly influence Mankind to "clean up its act". The Gods began by creating a language-barrier between each distinct culture. After that initial disruption, the Gods proceeded to feed Mankind false information, to distort their understanding of the universe.

the Gods are Banished
The Gods eventually created such a twisted array of misconceptions and falsehoods, that Mankind's civilization was nearly engulfed by war. The wars continued through the generations, until Mankind was almost annihilated. Finally, through the fog of war, four heroes emerged. Since each hero had somehow learned the truth behind the lies, the group was able to combine their knowledge in to a strategy, against the Gods. With the focused efforts of all of the remnants of Mankind behind them, the heroes were able to force the Gods in to their own energy supply.

The Gods put up such a defiant struggle, that their link to the Spirits became unstable. The Spirits then became unstable themselves and gradually began to drift toward the heart of the universe; toward the struggle. They drifted further and further toward the mental plane until much like the God before them, the Spirits burst through and for the first time, achieved conscious thought. Directly after attaining consciousness, each spirit smashed in to their relative god, changing suddenly in to a crystalline form upon impact. Each god was encased in a crystal, which came to rest at fixed locations, relative to their previous quadrants in space.

All of this expulsion of energy nearly destroyed the world, at very least, severely scarring its surface. The one supercontinent that had formed slowly over the years was split. Also, the Spirits were once like offshore energy wells, but were now physically part of the world; all of the energy in the universe was now within mortal grasp and without the Gods to directly feed off of it, the energy would be free to absorb... but the Crystals were still retaining all of that spiritual energy and for the moment, no one even knew that they existed.

About the time that Man's collective power rivaled that of their creators, the Gods once again began to feel tired.

With that, not only Man but every mortal creature was divided into two genders, one called 'male' and the other 'female.' Through a process of reproduction, their traits would be randomized and bestowed upon a new life form, created in their combined image.

About the time that Man's collective power rivaled that of their creators, the Gods once again began to feel tired.

Farewell.

With that, not only Man but every mortal creature was divided in to genders, one called 'male' and the other 'female.' Through a process of reproduction, their traits would be randomized and bestowed upon a new life form, created in their combined image.

Not looking fondly toward trip around the universe, the Gods became motivated to design a routine system to collect dead matter, faster and much more automatically than before. Since their normal creations seemed somehow ill-equipped to handle such an important task, the Gods developed two unique objects capable of filling their needs.
