Yes it does. Too many, actually.

=== Is my platform supported? ===

Look in [[Ports]].

=== Where can I look for help? ===

The IRC channel, #themanaworld-support, is a good start for solving small problems or doubts. Most people are from Europe (UTC or UTC+1 timezones), or the Americas (mostly UTC-5 to UTC-8), you will have more success at certain hours in the day. ''Please do not log out if you do not get an answer immediately''.

For more complex problems (compilations problems, crashes...) it is advisable to use the forums, as it is a non-volatile way of storing your claims. If you do it in IRC, some people won't have the opportunity to read them and your opportunity of getting further help will be narrowed. At the same time posting long logs or reports on IRC is not polite.

Of course, using the search feature and reading the forum announcements is a smart thing to do.

=== When is this game updated? ===

This has several answers.

The Mana client has a relatively slow release schedule - it was about 2 years after the last TMW client, 0.0.29.1, before the Mana team released 0.5.

For content things are much faster, usually around a month, although it varies quite a bit. Some content updates are minor - map fixes, dialog tweaks, etc. - whereas other add new quests or areas.

=== I want to help, how do I join the team? ===

First, if you are a developer read this: [[Joining the project]].

If you're a graphic artist is suggested you read the [[Guidelines]] and take a look at the '''Graphics''' section on the front page.

If you want to help coding some scripts or managing server content, read the [http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewforum.php?f=9 Jobs postings] subforum.

If you just want to suggest something, use the [http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewforum.php?f=4 Suggestions/Feedback] subforum.

=== I don't want to be rude but... I'm fed up with maggots!!! ===

One thing you'll notice if you invest hours every day into the game, is that you'll eventually run out of things to do. While we're constantly adding to the game with maps, quests, NPCs... we really can't keep up with demand. If you'd like to help this though, just join the project! It's as simple as that; you play the games, not us, so we don't know what you'd like to see and your opinion matters to us.

== Game-related questions ==

=== I'm a bit lost... How do I start? ===

There is an article specifically about this: [[Getting started]]. For a more detailed guide to the quests and items, see the [[Walkthrough]].

=== What are the keyboard shortcuts? ===

See the README file that came with your install for the list or press F1 while in game to see the help. The shortcut keys are configurable.

=== How do I choose my stats? ===

* '''Strength:''' Makes you hit harder with melee weapons.
* '''Agility:''' Makes your enemies hit you less often and increases your attack speed.
* '''Vitality:''' Increases your maximum HP and your HP recovery rate. Decreases the amount of damage you receive from hits.
* '''Intelligence:''' Increases your maximum MP and your MP recovery rate. This stat also determines what type of potions you receive when you put herbs in Caul's cauldron, and it increases the power of certain spells.
* '''Dexterity:''' Makes you hit harder with bows. Makes you miss your enemies less often with both melee and bow weapons.
* '''Luck:''' Makes you do critical hits from time to time.
For further reading see [[Stats]].

=== What are the different skills? ===

In game, you have '''three''' types of [[Skills]].

The [[Skills#Basic Skills|Basic Skills]] are needed to build relationships between you and other players in game:
* '''Emote Skill:''' Gives you the possibility of using emotes.
* '''Trade Skill:''' Gives you the ability to trade with other players. '''Think''' before trading your stuff!
* '''Party Skill:''' Gives you the possibility to enter or create a group with other players.

You will also be able to learn the [[Skills#Magic Skills|Magic Skills]] throughout the game.
* '''General Magic Skill:''' First form of magic which will give you the ability to learn other forms of magic.
* '''Life Magic Skill:''' Very useful if you intend to heal other players.
* '''War Magic Skill:''' This will give you the possibility to cast some painful spells.
* '''Transmutation Magic Skill:''' This skill gives you the possibility to transmute some items in other items.
* '''Nature Magic Skill:''' You will learn to communicate with the nature using spells.
* '''Astral Magic Skill:''' This is another skill leading to some new spells.

Finally, you will win some [[Skills#Focus Skills|Focus Skills]] by doing some quests in game, these skills are to be focused on before being able to use them. You currently can only focus on one at a time. Choose your stats correctly depending on the skill you choose:
* '''Focusing Skills:''' This skill will give you the possibility to focus on other skills.
* '''Brawling Skill:''' You hands will be as powerful as weapons.
* '''Speed Skill:''' You will be able to walk and hit faster.
* '''Resist Poison Skill:''' This skill makes you resist against poison.
* '''Astral Soul Skill:''' If you want to be a mage, this skill is the most useful one in game.
* '''Mallard's Eye Skill:''' Made for archers, this skill increases your bow range and damage.

'''For more informations, visit the [[Skills]] page.'''

=== What are MP for? ===

MP stands for "Magic Points", therefore, these are the points used to cast some magic spells.

== Common problems ==

=== When I try to login using the account that usually works, I get following message: Disconnected from server ===

The message is misleading. It means that the game server is not online at the moment. Try again later.

If you really want to make sure, make sure you're trying to connect to
server.themanaworld.org
and that the port in your
config.xml
is set to 6901.

If that is the case and you still are not convinced it really is down, run "ping -c1 <host>" to check if the server's machine is up at or run "telnet <host> <port>" to also check if the server software is listening on the port you specified. Telnet should timeout after a while if it cannot connect to the specific port on the host.

=== I heard the characters will be deleted when you move to the new server. Is that true? ===

No. Characters will not be deleted. Characters will not be migrated either. The way the two servers work are too different to make a migration of the player database reasonably possible. Both new and old servers will be available in the future. Your choice on which to play on.

== Game-related questions ==

=== I'm a bit lost... How do I start? ===

Ablu: Added note about how to use dyecmd

==Simple colors and palettes==

A pixel has a simple color if it is not black and if its non-zero RGB components are all equal. Or described in terms of the HSV color model: it has a hue divisible by 60, full saturation, and any volume other than zero.

There are seven simple colors:

* '''R'''ed
* '''G'''reen
* '''B'''lue
* '''C'''yan
* '''M'''agenta
* '''Y'''ellow
* '''W'''hite (gray, that is)

For a given color, there are 255 different intensities (from 1 to 255). For RGB, the non-zero value is the intensity. For HSV, the volume is the intensity, scaled to 255.

A palette is a sequence of RGB colors, for example
#8c4b41,da9041,ffff41
. An intensity of 255 becomes color
#ffff41
. An intensity of 0 is left unchanged (as black,
#000000
). Intensities with no explicit color are linearly interpolated between the two closest value. Black is implicitly the first color of the palette. For example:
{|
! intensity
! color
|-
|50
|
#522C26

|-
|85
|
#8c4b41

|-
|100
|
#995741

|-
|170
|
#da9041

|}

Palettes can have from one to 255 colors.

Pixels with complicated colors or without any dedicated palette are left unchanged by the dye process. The system can dye up to 1785 different colors.

==Specifying palettes==

Whenever an image (usually a
png
file) is specified in an
xml
file, a palette can be appended to its name. The image is then automatically dyed on loading. For example, if one changes an image resource from
foo.png
to
foo.png|W:#ffff00
, then all the gray pixels of
test.png
will be replaced by shades of yellow, as described above.

Several palettes (one per simple color) can be appended to an image. For example, green and red pixels are recolored independently for image
foo.png|G:''palette1'';R:''palette2''
.

Palettes can either be specified as the name of a file containing a palette (format not yet defined) or directly defined as a color sequence. A '''#''' symbol (often called ''pound'', ''hash'', or ''sharp'') is prefixed to a color sequence, so that the system understands that this is a color, not another file.

==Dyeing sprites==

When indicating the dyeable colors in an image, some palettes can be left unspecified. For example, the resource name
foo.png|G;R:''palette1'';Y
means that green, red, and yellow, pixels of the image have to be dyed. But no palettes are specified for green and yellow pixels.

These palettes will be specified at a higher level. If the
foo.png
file is part of a sprite description named
bar.xml
. Then palette specifications can be appended to the file name, e.g.
bar.xml|''palette2'';''palette3''
. These additional palettes are then propagated to any image loaded by
bar.xml
with unspecified palettes. So the
foo.png
is finally recolored with the dye
G:''palette2'';R:''palette1'';Y:''palette3''
.

===One-channel example===
Here is a simple example taken from actual game data. The
data/monsters.xml
file contains the descriptions of all the monsters. For black scorpions, the definition begins with

<monster id="1009" name="Black scorpion">
<sprite>monster-scorpion.xml|#0d1313,435a5a,879999,ffffff</sprite>
<sound event="hit">scorpion-hit1.ogg</sound>
...

The
data/graphics/sprite/monster-scorpion.xml
then describes the animation of any scorpion, whatever its color. It contains this line:

    <imageset name="base" src="graphics/sprites/monster-scorpion.png|W" width="48" height="45" />

The
monster-scorpion.png
file is a grayscale image, hence the '''W''' color specifier, so that all its pixels are blackened (or dyed to brown or red for other species of scorpions). If it contained some non-gray pixels, these would not be recolored by the palette specified in the
monsters.xml
file.

===Multi-channel example===
Here an example for multi-channel dyeing of an equipment sprite. This example recolors the gray sections of the image to green and the red sections to a gray-blue.

head-devcap.xml:

<imageset name="base" src="graphics/sprites/head-devcap.png|W;R" width="28" height="19" />

items.xml:

<sprite>head-devcap.xml|#22ff22,ffffff;#9999ff</sprite>

'''Note: Multi-channel dyeing is broken in version 0.0.24 but has been fixed in later versions'''

==Designing graphics to be dyeable==
The easy way to make an existing graphic recolorable is to select the parts you want to be recolored and run it through a convert-to-greyscale filter and voilà , you have a recolorable 'W' channel. For optimum results you should then adjust the levels of the grey area so that the darkest color is RGB 127, 127, 127 and the brightest color RGB 255, 255, 255. That way you can very simply define the darkest and the brightest color of the color ramp in items.xml.

When you want to use another dye channel than 'W' you can use "color channels" afterwards and remove one or two of the red, green and blue channel completely.

==Implementation remarks==

Palettes have to be specified as part of the image and sprite resource names, so that they can be properly cached. If they were not, there would be collisions: All the recolored sprites would have the same color, the first one to be put in the cache for a given sprite definition. Since they are part of the resource names, they may as well be part of the filenames written in
.xml
files.

==Ideas==

The ability to specify multiple channels for each palette would be nice. It'd be useful in certain cases (like [http://forums.themanaworld.org/viewtopic.php?p=37107#p37107 this robe]) where multiple channels are getting the same palette. One way to indicate it would be to have a comma-separated list of channels before the palette string (example: W,Y:#22ff22,ffffff). — [[User:Jaxad0127|Jaxad]][[User Talk:Jaxad0127|0127]] 19:46, 14 July 2008 (CEST)
==Test dyes without starting client==

The dye engine can also be used standalone as console program. The tool can be found in the mana repository (clone git://github.com/mana/mana.git).
cd tools/dyecmd
cmake .
make
You will find the binary at src/dyecmd. Example use:
# dyecmd <source_image> <target_image> <dye_string>
dyecmd "armor-legs-shorts.png" "armor-legs-shorts2.png" "W:#222255,6666ff"

==Documentation==

"required" means that the tag/attribute MUST be defined. When a required tag/attribute is missing the whole parent tag should be ignored by the parser.

"recommended" means that the tag/attribute can be omitted but it is usually not advisable to do so. When a "recommended" tag/attribute is missing the parser should output a warning but process the entry normally.

"optional" means that the tag/attribute is not necessary in every case.

"Client" means that the tag/attribute is client-sided and '''can''' be omitted from the server file. "Server" means that it is server-sided and '''should''' be omitted from the client file to avoid spoilers. "Client+Server" means that the information is used by both the server and the client and has to be identical.

=== monster ===
One monster entry in the database.
;id:(Client+Server, required) Unique monster type ID used to identify the monster type in the netcode.
;name:(Client, recommended) Name that is displayed when the monster is targeted.
;targetCursor:(Client, recommended) Size of the target cursor.

=== sprite ===
(Client, recommended)
The sprite definition file which is used as a graphical representation of the sprite (relative to data/graphics/sprites). There should only be one sprite tag for each monster.

=== sound ===
(Client, optional)
;event:(required) The situation in which the sound is played. Possible values are "hit" (the monster attacks), "hurt" (the monster is hit by an attack) and "die" (the monster dies).
A sound file relative to data/sfx which is played at various events related to the monster. There may be any number of effect tags. When there are multiple sound tags for the same event a random one of them is played.

=== drop ===
(Server, optional)
;item:(required) ID number of the dropped item as listed in items.xml
;percent:(required) Probability of item drop in percent.
An item the monster can drop when it is defeated. Every monster can have an infinite amount of drops.

=== attributes ===
(Server, required)
The character attributes of the monster. The basic attributes like strength, vitality and so on are derived from these attributes instead of the other way around like it is done for player characters. It is easier for the server administrator to assign reasonable attributes to the monsters when doing it this way. All properties are required.

;hp: Initial and maximum hit points of the monster.
;size: Radius of the bounding circle of the monster in pixels. A Monster is affected by attacks and other area-of-effect effects when its bounding circle overlaps with their area of effect. For comparison: A player character has a bounding circle radius of 16 pixel.
;speed: Movement speed of the monster in pixels per second
;attack-min: Minimal [[Damage calculation|damage]] of attacks with a damage factor ot "1"
;attack-delta: Difference between minimal and maximal [[Damage calculation|damage]] of attacks with a damage factor ot "1"
;attack-magic: Magical attack power
;hit: [[hitting and dodging|Hit accuracy]] of physical attacks
;evade: [[hitting and dodging|Evade accuracy]] against physical attacks
;physical-defence: [[Damage calculation|Defence against physical attacks]]
;magical-defence: Defence against magical attacks
;mutation: (optional) Mutation factor of the monster in percent. All attributes of every spawned monster of this type are randomly modified up or down inside this range.

===vulnerability===
(server, optional)
Defines an elemental vulnerability or resistance.
;element: (required) Name of the [[Elements|element]] the monster is vulnerable/invulnerable against
;factor: (required) All damage the monster receives from the element is multiplied with this value.

=== exp ===
(Server, recommended)
[[Skill system|Experience reward]] for defeating the monster.
;level: (optional) Maximum skill level after which experience gets a penalty. Setting to "0" (or omitting) means that there is never an exp penalty through skill level for this monster.

=== behavior ===
(Server, required)
General behavior of the monster AI
;script:(optional) Filename of a Lua script that controls the monsters behavior. Should only be used for rare monsters to reduce server load. (makes all other tags unnecessary)
;aggressive: (required) Does the monster attack without being provoked? Values are "true" or "false".
;track-range: (required) Distance in tiles the monster tracks enemies in (pathfinding algorithmn is used for calculating distance).
;stroll-range: (required) Distance in tiles the being chooses new destinations in when not fighting.
;cowardly: (required) Does the monster flee when attacked? Values are "true" or "false". Combining aggressive="true" with cowardly="true" results in a monster that uses hit&run tactics (attacks unprovoked and flees when the target fights back).
;attack-distance: Prefered distance to the enemy the monster tries to reach when in combat (horizontal or vertical)

=== attack ===
(Client+Server, optional)
An attack the monster can perform. A monster can have multiple different attacks.
;id: (client+server, required) Id number of the attack (unique for each monster) used to identify the monster type in the netcode.
;priority: (server, optional) How likely the monster is to choose this attack when it got multiple attacks it can use in the current situation.
;type: (server, required) Type of attack. Values are "physical" and "magical".
;pre-delay: (server, required) Delay in game ticks* between the decision to perform this attack and performing it.
;aft-delay: (server, required) Delay in game ticks* after the attack until the monster can act again.
;damage-factor: (server, required) Multiplier applied to minimum and maximum damage as they have been calculated by using the monster attributes.
;range: (server, required) Range of the attack.
;angle: (server, required) Angle of effect of the attack.
;animation: (client, recommended) Animation that is played when the monster uses this attack.
;particle-effect: (client, optional) Particle effect that is initialized when the monster uses this attack.
<nowiki>*</nowiki> 10 game ticks = 1 second.

=== script ===
(Server, optional)
Defines a script file with the scripts for the monster.
